Anurag Kashyap directs a dark and emotional psychological thriller. A compelling, stylish drama that hits home with the city kids. It narrates the story of two people, Ajay (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Nidhi (Kiara Advani), who come from the same background. But, Ajay is a city kid and Nidhi is a farm girl. They meet for the first time. While Ajay goes to meet Nidhi's family to get her job in his uncle's restaurant, he notices that her brother, Chintu, is missing. Ajay helps Nidhi get away from the man who was harassing her and he returns home. When Chintu returns home, he soon realizes that he had gone missing. The two of them live together for a few days but Ajay has to leave as he has to work in Mumbai. While Ajay is away, Chintu is forced to seduce Nidhi. When Ajay returns, he thinks that Nidhi had betrayed him and he is furious. He tracks down Nidhi's father and threatens him. Ajay then leaves to Mumbai. He and his friend Ram (Veda Krishnamoorthy) decide to rob a bank. But Ram gets caught and is soon arrested. Ajay is almost caught too, but he manages to escape.
Ajay goes to the railway station to get on a train to Mumbai. The crowd had gathered around the gate as people are rushing to board the train. He notices Nidhi's brother, Chintu, approaching him. Ajay is hesitant to talk to him because he is very upset and is angry with Nidhi. But then, Nidhi comes running and asks Ajay to help her with the ticket and boards the train. As the train starts moving, Ajay and Nidhi get into a conversation. Ajay starts telling her about his past and the future.
